If you’re using an AR for home defense or duty - what’s your ammo choice and why?

Currently researching a few options and am interested in what you guys landed on.

Seeing how well the basic FMJ worked for Rittenhouse, I'm not sold on trying to be fancy, but I still have a couple magazines of Hornady Superformance on hand.

Yea nothing wrong with fragmenting/tumbling FMJ

The problem with FMJ for home defense is over penetration. Try to find something that won't shoot through a bad guy and two sheets of drywall into the next room where your family is.

I’ve used Hornady TAP before but, at the moment, couldn’t quote the exact configuration of the round; I think they have a few different offerings under the TAP label.

It seems like Hornady also used to sell some 50-count boxes of their soft-point “training” ammo; I’ve loaded-up with that before, too.

Ever used the IMI 77 grain OTM’s? I’ve been looking at those and the gold dot 75 grain. Got a 13.7” 1:7 twist barrel so I’m thinking the heavier bullets would be a good choice.

Never used the IMI ones but they should be good to go. I've got a little over 500 rounds of the S&B ones and they're good

Subsonics for 5.56 are a bit tricky from what I've heard; they either cycle in an automatic but keyhole at 25 yards or they don't cycle and leave you with effectively a straight-pull bolt action.

Any quality jacketed soft point should meet your needs. In the smaller caliber, I would not want subsonic.
