Mauser 98k class: rounds fail to be picked up under extractor

I've been struggling with this 98k as of late. The second round (and thereafter) don't get picked up by the extractor claw when the bolt's back, which means then the round's just getting pushed into the chamber. Since the extractor isn't closing over the cartridge rim, this means the bolt's not going to close.

I checked/replaced the magazine spring, even swapped out the extractor on general principle, no joy. The only time it seems to work if you're working the bolt like you hate it/trying to rapid fire. I know that can't be the right answer.

Any ideas?
