Anybody know if $400 for a Marlin Model 336 .30-30 is a fair price?

If it is in good shape, then yes. Even more so if it was made before Remington acquired them (sometime around 2009 if I recall).

I paid $700 at a gun show for a JM stamped 336 in near mint condition.
The Remington made marlins or (Remlins) where not as high quality as the original marlins,ruger has started the marlin line back up they just released the 45-70 guide gun at shotshow.I’m hoping ruger gets the quality right

If it's in good shape that's a great price right now. I've seen 336's going for 800-1000 dollars right now as we wait for Ruger to pick up production on new ones.
