Just saying thanks to all who responded. I have now found two (hopefully) great rifles. Howa 1500 in 308, and Weatherby Vanguard in 30-06. The Vanguard is for my son, and he is super excited. I know both rifles are made by Howa, but I must say that the Vanguard has a few touches that set it apart. The composite stock is solid, not flimsy, and it has the Monte Carlo cheek rest. The Howa's Hogue stock is not quite as rigid. Both stocks are definitely better and more rigid that anything I recently saw on Savage, Ruger, and Remington. The finish on the Vanguard is very smooth. The bolt movement on the Vanguard may be just a touch smoother than the Howa. My son and I are ready to head to the range.
